Mission Opportunities at Christ Presbyterian Church
We are a mission-oriented church that seeks to respond to human needs in our local community and throughout the world. We believe that we are being faithful to God when we “do justice, love kindness, and walk humbly with our God" (Micah 6:8). Our Mission Team is engaged in coordinating hands-on mission projects where our members get actively involved in helping others. We assist low-income members of our community by: supplying food banks with produce from our Community Garden; weatherizing homes in the fall; and distributing food baskets at Thanksgiving and Christmas. Our active Sewing and Service Small Group donates their work to local organizations and one of our women's groups sends toiletries, books, and other supplies to our military service personnel overseas. Several of our members give of their time and talent to help local social service agencies. We have sent mission teams to Ottawa, Ohio; Bayou La Batre, Alabama; Pepechuca, Mexico; and Dariol, Haiti. We also provide financial resources to assist local community agencies and international mission projects.
2010 Mission Projects and Trips
DISASTER ASSISTANCE For three years we have sent mission teams out to provide relief to families that have been victims of floods or hurricanes. Our previous teams have gone to Alabama and Iowa.
From April 18-24, 2010, seven of us traveled to Lake Charles, Louisiana to serve with Presbyterian Disaster Assistance in helping victims of Hurricane Rita. As it turned out we spent the week helping Moses Jones and his son, Jerin, restore and improve their home.
We can all be grateful that Presbyterian churches throughout the Southeast have opened their doors to relieve poverty and disaster for victims in their communities.
I am grateful that our church has been able to respond directly to the needs of hurricane victims. It is always rewarding to help those who are so thankful for our support.
INTERNATIONAL
Haiti
The Wharram family has developed an ongoing relationship with Sam Rice, a nurse and missionary, in Haiti. They have taken teams to Haiti in the past years.
Mexico
We will again be joining with Dios es Amor Presbyterian Church in Mexico City as they serve the poor in their country. We will probably be travelling to the mountain village of Pepechuca where our mission team served two years ago. Mission Co-Leader, Anne Taylor, and Pastor Tom Schwartz will be leading this team. We have arranged for this trip to be held August 5 - August 10. We will be offering Spanish classes in the Spring for those who desire to join us. Please sign up in the narthex if you are interested in joining this year’s team.
the corner It’s hard to make ends meet through the end of the month. Some people find themselves making a choice between feeding their family and paying their bills. On two Mondays each month, a warm and hearty meal will be served to all those who come to the corner at Sylvania and Talmadge (Christ Presbyterian Church). This caring ministry seeks to help those in our neighborhood and beyond. Meals will be served from 5:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. The corner is easily accessible by bus route 39/39M at the Westfield Mall at Franklin Park or you can call TARTA at 419-243-RIDE (7433).
