"Our Stories as Faith Journeys"

Five Week Lenten Study

February 24 - March 24  from 2:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m.

Throughout the Bible, God is made known through stories. The thread that connects all the events of our lives is the awareness of God’s presence drawing us into a deeper relationship. We will explore our stories as part of our journey of faith, and learn from them where God’s Spirit has been active throughout our lives—often in ways we have yet to discover. Remembering and finding ways to share our stories is crucial to our own reflection and enrichment, but also to those we know (friends, children or grandchildren) who need wisdom and encouragement in their own faith journey.

"Christians in a Global Community"

Disciple Bible Study Offerings

Invitation to the Old Testament (8 week study)
Sundays, January 10 - February 28
7:00 p.m. - 8:30 p.m.

Led by Pastor Tom Schwartz

"As Christians, we often read the Bible "from back to front." That is, we start with the Gospels, with the message of Jesus and his followers, and then we read back into the Old Testament, usually looking for clues to better understand the New Testament and the claims of our faith. What we can lose sight of is that Jesus of Nazareth lived his life as a Jew. He was immersed in "the law and the prophets," the sacred texts that would become the Hebrew Bible. So in a sense, the story of our faith as Christians really begins with the Hebrew Bible. For that story is where Jesus’ story began.

Consequently, in this study, we will read the Old Testament "from front to back." We will begin with Israel’s understanding of who they were and who God is, and who they are in relation to God. We will not study the Old Testament as merely the precursor for the New Testament. The Hebrew Scriptures have their own integrity. So we will study the Hebrew Bible for what it says, in and of itself, to discover not simply how these texts have spoken to God’s people for centuries, but to learn what these texts have to say to God’s people today."                                                                                  - Drs. Sinclair and Tabor

Tom Schwartz will be leading this class for those who range in skill level from novice to lay scholar. Everyone is welcome and every question will be valued. This study will require at least one hour of outside reading each week and the purchase of a participant book at a cost of $10.00.  Please sign-up in the Narthex or call the church office at 419-475-8629.
